I am on vacation visiting friends all week in LA. This vacation is much needed. It is amazing what a little sunlight and warm weather can do.
Today, I want to give a shout out to Olympic Spa, a Korean bathhouse and spa in West Hollywood. Friends have suggested this place for a while now. It's a women only bathhouse with various pools and steam rooms where you can get facials, scrubs and massages at cheap prices.
Growing up I was wiggy about bathhouses. I am not sure why. We lived walking distance from a famous Russian/Turkish bathhouse in the East Village and my Mom, who was a sauna/steam room addict, would go every Wednesday morning during the women only hours. She would try to get me to go with her and I would refuse. It seemed sort of gross being around all of those naked people and then sharing pools and steam rooms and stuff.
I've been over that for a long time now but I just realized that this was my first bathhouse experience. I do not really know the difference between a Russian bathhouse and a Korean one. You should just google it somewhere. But this experience was a 100% enjoyable. I am now going there every time I come to LA!
Beebs and I soaked in a hot tub, a cold pool, a hot pool with some kind of tea in it and various steam rooms and saunas. Finally I got a milk and honey scrub which made my skin so incredibly smooth. Yes it was strange to have a small Korean woman in her undies scrub my entire body but I just closed my eyes and got over it. (In India, when I had a similar scrub and Ayurvedic massage, it was a similar experience but with two women. There they gave you a teeny g-string type thing that was supposed to cover my private bits but it was so tiny I just took it off. It felt silly.)
I highly recommed this spot, especially because it is so cheap. My scrub was $45 with the soak included. This is cheap by spa standards. I have to find someplace like this in New York. Any suggestions?
