Broken English

I just loved this film. Parker Posey is crazy, crazy, crazy in this film and I related to her a lot! I related so much it sort of scared me.

I don't want to tell you all to run out and see this movie because I know that what made me love it was how much I related to it. I know there are things wrong with it but I just decided that I did not care about those things. Once I made that decision, I just gave in to the film and adored it. Oh and I adored Parker Posey's clothes as well!

Oh, and not to objectify him but the French guy in this film is really hot! I wonder if French guys feel like they are stereotyped in US films. I am sure they do not mind.

American Gangster

Sure, this movie looks like a high budget New Jack City but the trailer has me sold for the following reasons:

1. T.I. is in it and my crush on him is HUGE!
2. I love when Denzel Washington plays a villian.
3. Ridley Scott is a good director ... most of the time.
4. There is a whole lot of overacting going on and I am all for it.
5. Russell Crowe is hit or miss but I get a good feeling about him in this film.
6. They shot part of this on my block.
7. Other crushes of mine in this film: Idris Elba, Josh Brolin and Chiwetel Ejiofor! (I'm too lazy to link to all of these people. Sorry!)
8. I was just saying that I was shocked that they had not made a fiction film about Nicky Barnes. (He is featured in this film in a smaller role, played by Cuba Gooding Jr.)

Queen Bees and Wannabees

I know I am late to admit the greatness of this book but here I am. This book was the inspiration for the great movie, Mean Girls. (Oh, how I miss Lindsey Lohan before you was super famous and in rehab.) I learned so much from this book. I went to an all girls high school and work at an almost entirely female office. I spend a lot of time with women. And though this book is about high school girls, a lot of the roles that girls played throughout high school, still pertain today. I highly suggest this book especially if you are a parent of a teenage girl. One gem:

Here comes pleasing and trying to keep up, again - trying to keep up with your sexuality active friends; trying to keep up with your boyfriend, who wants to have sex; trying to keep up with a society that pushes girls to be mature and sophisticated even as it wags its finger at them for being slutty.

The Big Day

My friends, David and Adriana, asked me to officiate their wedding. A bit later I will probably have some deep thoughts on it. For now, I am sort of amazed by how short the ceremony was. As soon as it began, it was over. My friend keeps saying that this whole thing could be a romantic comedy starring Jennifer Aniston. The plot is a single girl who has lost her faith in love become an officiant for weddings and finds love. Who knows?

Their wedding was so beautiful and I was so honored to be a part of it in such an important way.

For those who are curious -- and many people are -- it is easy to get officiated. You simply do it online. I used openordination.org. Then I went down to City Hall and got a certificate. Simple.

Who Do I Believe?

The Isaiah Washington drama continues. I don't want to care about this but I just can't help myself.

Angie Plays Black (Part Black That Is)

My friend has been bugging me about writing about Angie Jolie in A Mighty Heart. I have to see the film and the chances of that are slim. That film has Netflix written all over it in my book. I have issues with Angie playing Marianne Pearl in principle but I feel like I need to see the film to give my final verdict. It is just hard as a black girl to watch a white Jolie wear a lame biracial girl wig and take a part that has Thandie Newton written all over it.

A gal I don't know, Logan Nakyanzi Pollard, wrote a piece for The Huffington Post that is pretty good. She makes a lot of points I might have made. I am pretty impressed by a lot of the writers over there. I know I am writing for them too but I feel a bit like a freshman at an ivy league. There are worse problems to have.

I'm Only 31!

This just makes me feel old. I make jokes all the time about being an old woman but I didn't mean it.

My New York age is 35

This New York age puts you into a middle category between young and old (but not "middle age" per se). Be proud. You've got a nice balance between going out hard-core and staying in. You care about culture but also like some quiet nights. Keep it up, but think about expanding your horizons in the other directions. Head to Studio B or Anthology Film Archives for the first time, or finally check out the Village Vanguard or Elaine's for a dose of old-school NYC.

Save McSweeney's

McSweeney's is selling their goodies for cheap because a distributor's bankruptcy caused them to lose $130,000.  And though they are not always my cup of tea and are a little too much of an insider publication, I really respect what they do.  Also, as a producer, we had a scare that the same thing happened with a vendor we were dealing with.  We would have lost a decent amount of money and I was scared!  It all worked out but my sympathetic nature made me buy a book published by McSweeney's that I have been wanting for a while:  What is the What?  I am so excited to read it.

If there is anything you've ever wanted to buy from these guys, do it now!  Miranda July is selling some stuff but it's too rich for my blood.

A Father's Day Thought

I wrote this yesterday for The Huffington Post and I feel pretty proud of it. I thought it was important to write something on Father's Day that speaks a bit to people who do not have their parents around. Plus, it was on my mind.
