The IFP Awards

I decided that I don't think this was a very good year for movies. The nominees for this year's awards were fine but nothing to write home about. Usually, there is a film that I LOVE and want to get some recognition but I'm not sure I feel that way this year. Here are some specific thoughts:

*I kind of think Sideways was overrated. I feel sad about that but it's just the truth.

*Primer won everything at Sundance last year and who really saw it! I mean, I know it's called Independent Spirit but come on. Don't a few people need to have seen it.

*I loved Before Sunset and am excited that they got a screenplay nomination. I hope they get an Oscar nod. I know it won't win but it made me smile.

*I loved The Woodsman. That film can't get enough recognition.

*Garden State is fine but if it gets an Oscar nomination, I think I'm going to be upset.

*I am really excited for Brother to Brother getting so many nods. Like I said, I think it's an ok film but it just makes me happy that everyone involved is getting recognition.

*My friend Shola got nominated for her documentary, Chisholm 72: Unbought and Unbossed which will air on POV in February. I am so happy.

*The lead women in Maria Full of Grace was fantastic --

*But that film was just all right. It was kind of cheesy and I just knew an American was trying to make a film about something they didn't know anything about.

I just never thought I would see the day that this pairing would happen. I'm not sure how I feel about it.

Another Ethnic Person

I think that Bush believes that if he sticks an ethnic person in every post, I will blindly believe that they are out for my best interests. This is the latest guy who has an interesting background but I am now so cynical that I can't even give him a chance.

Here is my favorite quote of Bush's when introducing Carlos Gutierrez. This quote only feeds my cynicism:

With Carlos's leadership, we'll help more Americans, especially minorities and women, to start and grow their own small business. We'll reduce the burden of junk lawsuits and regulations on our entrepreneurs. We'll reform our outdated tax code to eliminate needless paperwork and encourage savings, investment and growth.

My Lists

have finally been updated. God bless Thanksgiving vacation.

The main change is that I am not putting the photos next to my "reviews" in the Netflix Rentals section. I just don't have the patience. It's what's been keeping my behind in putting them up. I'm sure you won't miss them but if you do ... well ... there's really nothing you can do about it.

An Online Dating Update

Many have asked how that's going. Not much of an update. Most, actually, all of the guys that have emailed me have been 40 year old bald (or balding) white men who when you scroll down their profile, you see that they are only looking for black women. Hmmm, and why would that be?

I had a feeling that online dating wasn't for me but now I know it's not for me.

My friend, Paul, said to put a disclaimer on my ad and I decided why not. He was really amused by it and I had fun writing it. It read:

Note: I am totally open to white men. Really. But I am not open to white men who are just looking to date black women. You know who you are!

Yeah, I'm going to be single forever but at least I make myself laugh!

A Change of Heart

I've had one about Nellie McKay who I saw in concert with Jamie Cullum this past summer at Joe's Pub's version of Summerstage. I thought she was a bit too spastic in concert and I remember afterwards having a conversation with my friends, being unsure if we liked her. She played piano fantastically well and had a great voice but her whole kind of dizzy girl with a brain schtick was kind of grating.

I just found out that she was 19 and immediately knew why she was such a spaz in concert. So I gave her another chance and am now a fan! Her songs are so clever and hearing her "rhyme" just amuses. My favorite song right now is Sari, the song that disses (I am trying to bring that word back. There is no acceptable alternative.) the Oxygen network. I've been listening to it over and over and am now obsessed with the chorus:

I'm sorry for the the mess, the stupid way I dressed, I guess I failed my test.
Oh, don't you know I'm sorry for my views, I don't know how to schmooze.
Really I'm sorry for you.

Showers In Other People's Houses

I was taking a shower in my brother's apartment and of course I scanned the products. My sister in law likes products and keeping things clean so I figured there might be some good girly products to experiment with.

There were many Johnson and Johnson products that make me smell like an infant. Passed on using those. There was a bottle of a nice smelling custom made thing that was a cross between oils and body wash that I wasn't sure if I should use to wash my body or heavily lubricate my scalp with. I left that alone.

And then there was the lone bottle of Old Spice. I picked it up and noticed the new packaging. It still smells the same, the way guys think you want them to smell but how you really would prefer them not to smell. And one line on the back:

It Washes Eveything Away But The Testostorone.

Come To A Hearing In New York

If you are around next Wednesday, you should attend this. It is a public hearing in New York about the debate around the death penalty. I have never been to a legislative hearing before so I am excited. I doubt that I will be able to put my two cents in but I'll keep you posted.

Your attendance is greatly needed at the first legislative hearing on the death penalty in New York in order to demonstrate to the legislature and Governor Pataki that New Yorkers DO NOT want the death penalty!

Three Assembly committees, Judiciary, Codes, and Correctons will be holding this hearing. Our campaign to prevent a "quick fix" has worked. We want more: to stop the death penalty for good.

Please plan to be join us and spread the word as widely as possible and as soon as possible.

David set up a Quickpost function on my computer. It's supposed to allow me to blog more easily but I'm not sold. I have a real problem with typos and always have to go back to fix my posts anyway. I am of the mind that the posts that I put more thought into are the better ones and therefore take a bit of time to construct. Those are my two cents.
