My name is Angela Tucker. I have a respectable job and I am poor. OK, I'm exaggerating but not really. Literally yesterday morning I had to go through my change jar for a cup of coffee. (God bless Kibra and Danielle for taking pity on me and hookin me up with a decent meal.) People always are so impressed by what I do and that's cool and all but lately I've been having a desire for some cold hard cash! I think...rather, I KNOW... that part of it has to do with my being HORRIBLE with money. This week my raise begins and hopefully things are going to be different. Oh, wait. My check is in my in-box. Wait a moment and I will update you.
(I WALK OVER TO MY IN-BOX)
False alarm. I don't get paid until Monday. My friend, Isha hinted not to get too excited because, "Uncle Sam can be a bitch." Sigh!
Anyway, here are some cheap things I am doing this weekend. Feel free to join if, like me, you are cash challenged.
FRIDAY: I am speaking on my first panel tomorrow on Media Activism. Not quite sure what I am going to say but it makes me feel like a grown up so I said yes. This means that I get an all access pass to The New York Underground Film Festival and am seeing some film/any film. My usual snootiness about films I have not heard of instantly disappears when presented with a free option. I think I'll pack a lunch like the old days. My Dad, my favorite movie buddy, and I used to sneak sandwiches and bodega bought popcorn into the movies. That sounds like a fine idea.
SATURDAY: My friend, Laura has free passes to every gym in the city. Because she lives in the city and never, ever goes to Brooklyn, I happily acquired a bunch of free passes to gyms all over Brooklyn. First stop will be Eastern Athletic on Eastern Parkway. My sneakers have seen better days so I think yoga is the way to go.
SUNDAY: All the coffee and free wireless I can get at Muddy Waters. Thanks Ntosake (she's the owner).
upon receiving my student stipend last month i did a small double-take. one of the digits was up by 1 (but unfortunately not the digit that really matters). it then hit me that my recent teaching stint had resulted in that mythical "stipend raise" graduates students whisper about but almost never see. i instantly blew my stipend raise on a banana republic pink blouse, hence returning my raise to its mythical status.
