I am working on this film about African American women with bipolar disorder so I am totally obsessed with it. My mother had it and as a child of someone who is bipolar, you are always a little curious mainly about whether or not it is going to happen to you. So, this month's New York Magazine's cover article, Are You Bipolar?was a welcome sight for me.
Bipolar has changed face in a new era. Gone (thankfully and hopefully) are the days where being diagnosed as bipolar was almost a death sentance. Back when my Mom was alive, folks just gave her some hardcore, non-working lithium and called it a day. Now, there are several medications and in the words of the writer, "various shades of bipolar".
This article begins so promisingly in really dispelling the stereotypes that exist about being bipolar in today's society. Still, the end is disappointing. The article begins almost by showing a young woman (a Carrie of SITC type gal) navigating through this illness and keeping her humor and her essence in tact. However, having the conclusion be that she goes to another therapist who shows her to have been misdiagnosed just seems strange. It made the article almost seem like her week in the life of someone bipolar.
Yes I am bipolar. It just galls me when people trivialize this devastating illness. It has cost me relationships, my good credit among other things. My depressions are so bad that, untreated I try to commit suicide, anything to stop the pain. Same thing goes in mania, racing thoughts, paranoia, hallucinations, can't string a 3 word sentence together, people can't understand my speech the list goes on. I feel like telling that woman on the Times magazine
and Jayson Blair to get stuffed. Untreated bipolar is a living hell!
